Tiny Tim was nothing less than a cultural phenomenon for much of the later 20th century. With his high-pitched voice and ukulele in hand, was the kind of guy who stood out like no one else in the industry. But behind the funny, odd personality was a life full of unexpected and sometimes sad moments. Let’s take a look at it.
1. A Kid Named Herbert
In 1932, Herbert Khaury was born into a working-class family in New York City. His father was an immigrant from Lebanon while his mother was a Jewish refugee from Poland.
2. Early Interest In Music
Herbert spent much of his quiet childhood listening to music, usually classics from the 1910s and 20s. He used music as a way to express himself as he was always considered somewhat of an outcast being a second-generation immigrant in a working-class environment.
3. Finding His Signature
As Herbert grew older and older, his entire life started to revolve around music. At the age of 11, his father noticed how much music meant to him and gifted him a ukulele. That was the exact moment Tiny Tim was born, as the ukulele would go on to become his signature instrument.
4. Getting Inspired
One thing that helped Herbert find his style was spending hours listening to radio shows and records from the golden age of vaudeville, practicing their comedic timing and musical techniques.
5. Becoming An Expert
Even when Herbert wasn’t listening to music, he was learning about it. He was considered a music encyclopedia, mastering different instruments and knowing obscure facts about music history. It was at this point that people around him realized he had a gift.
6. The Voice Of An Angel
Herbert’s own voice was quite different from most singers from that time. He had a very thin, high-pitched falsetto voice, something he got made fun of a lot more. But Herbert decided to embrace his falsetto voice, even though he could sing in lower registers because it was something that would make him stand out.
7. An Underground Act
After maturing and expanding his own knowledge and skills, Herbert decided he wasn’t gonna keep his gift all to himself. He started performing in small venues across New York City, usually under a pseudonym like “Emmett Swink” or “Judas K. Foxglove”. He became an underground hit in the 50s, and many event managers started to hire him on the regular.
8. The Unique Experience
The first hint of Tiny Tim being born was when Herbert started to elaborately dress up in order to stand out from other performers. He grew out his hair, started wearing strange makeup, and wore super colorful clothes. Whenever he was on stage, all eyes were on him.
9. A Mental Health Scare
As Herbert began performing regularly and became more extravagant with his persona, some of the people around him became rather confused. His own mother, not understanding the act, was in the process of turning Herbert into a mental health institution before his father intervened. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t stop Herbert from diving even deeper into the industry.
10. Tiny Tim Is Born
By the 60s, Herbert was a regular and well-known performer in Greenwich Village. He began performing the song Tiptoe Through the Tulips which became a crowd favorite, and it became clear he had to stick to a single name. His manager at the time, George King, came up with the name “Tiny Tim” one night when Herbert was following a midget act, and the name stuck. It was the beginning of something truly special.
11. Moving To Another Platform
Eventually, Tiny Tim became such a big hit on stage that he started to get the attention of some producers on TV, who managed to land him gigs on the relatively new platform. He was appearing on national TV, singing songs like Tiptoe Through the Tulips and On the Good Ship Lollipop, and he was getting a lot of attention.
12. Signing A Deal
After dominating the silver screen with his performances, Tiny Tim became somewhat of a household name. The natural next step for him was to sign a record deal, and he did just that by signing with Frank Sinatra’s Reprise Records.
13. One Chance To Prove Himself
Tim started recording his first album in December 1967. He managed to get Richard Perry, a producer who has worked with the likes of Barbara Streisand and Ringo Starr, to produce the album for him. Tim decided to record much of the album in his signature falsetto voice but also included a much deeper baritone voice in some tracks, showing off his vocal range.
14. God Bless Tiny Tim
His first album was officially released in May 1968, titled God Bless Tiny Tim, it became a moderate success for the label. The album’s release also coincided with the release of Tiptoe Through The Tulips as a single, and that was what really put Tiny Tim on the map. The single reached number 15 on the Billboard charts and it was being heard across the country.
15. The Second Album
After the success of God Bless Tiny Tim, the artist released the aptly titled “Tiny Tim’s 2nd Album,” in November 1968. This was considered a more “serious” album compared to the first one, with a lot less focus on the falsetto voice and a lot more focus on singing technique and lyrics. It featured some original songs as well as a lot of covers of old classics.
16. For The Kids
After two back-to-back successes, Tiny Tim would release his third album, a collection of children’s songs titled “For All My Little Friends”. His voice actually complimented the songs really well and the album even ended up being nominated for a Grammy Award. It marked the first and only time Tiny Tim was nominated for a Grammy.
17. Becoming An Icon
During this time, Tiny Tim’s popularity started to reach its zenith. His entire character was so out there, and people started speculating whether or not it was even an act. He was appealing to kids, but at the same time, kids were scared of his persona and his unique voice. It made him conflicting but also captivating.
18. Strange Habits
A lot of the speculation surrounding Tiny Tim also concerned his mental health. Much like how his mother thought he had mental issues, so did many of his fans. Some of his strange hygiene practices started to be reported in the media, including his habit of bathing up to 5 times a day.
19. Getting Married On TV
In December 1969, Tiny Tim would make the biggest move of his career. He appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and during his appearance, he married a 17-year-old named Miss Vicki live on television. The event was a massive hit, getting over 40 million views and becoming one of the most-watched specials on TV. The marriage would last 8 years.
20. Calming Things Down
After the marriage, Tim decided to take a step back from TV and focus more on his live performances. He was performing successful concerts around the world, becoming a regular at the Las Vegas Strip and performing in front of 600,000 at the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival, reportedly stealing the show.
21. Starting To Decline
The 70s were not a good time for Tiny Tim. The novelty of his act started to wear off and many serious music critics and audiences started to see him as more of a gimmick. The lack of TV appearances also started to have an impact on his popularity.
22. Touring To Stay Afloat
For much of the 70s, 80s and 90s, Tim started to face some financial and personal struggles. His income wasn’t as steady as before, he would have multiple marriages, neither of which would last. He went back to becoming a small-time performer and becoming a legacy act. His music was still somewhat popular and his name was recognizable, so it was just enough to keep him afloat.
23. A Shocking End
In September 1996, Tiny Tim suffered a heart attack on stage while performing at a ukulele festival. Hospitalized for three weeks, he was warned against performing due to his declining health but ignored the advice. On November 30, 1996, during a gala benefit in Minneapolis, he felt unwell but performed anyway. While singing “Tiptoe Through the Tulips,” he collapsed on stage from a heart attack. Taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
24. Forever Remembered
Tiny Tim’s funeral was held in an eccentric fashion as everyone had expected, with his signature ukulele placed across his chest and his casket adorned with tulips as a nod to his most famous song.
Tiny Tim would go on to become even more iconic in death. His song “Tiptoe Through The Tulips” would become a horror movie staple, namely in the Insidious series. He would also be remembered for embracing his quirky side, something artists would continue to replicate for decades to come, and paving the way for the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, and Lady Gaga.
